Free Things to Do in Hyderabad: 30 Ideas That Cost Nothing

Updated 2026-10-12 · 6 min read · by the hyderabad2go team

Hyderabad is generous to people who do not want to spend. Its best views, its lake, its bazaars, its festivals and a surprising number of concerts, talks and exhibitions cost nothing at all. Below are 30 free things to do, grouped by type, followed by a short list of things that are almost free. For free events on specific dates, our free events page is updated daily.

Free every day

1. Tank Bund at sunset. The road along the eastern edge of Hussain Sagar is lined with statues of Telugu poets, reformers and rulers, and it faces the Buddha statue in the lake. Come at dusk and stay as the lights come on. Hussain Sagar; Lakdikapul or Khairatabad (Red Line), then a short walk or auto.

2. Birla Mandir. The white marble temple on Naubat Pahad is open to all, and its terrace has the widest free view in the city. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside. Lakdikapul (Red Line).

3. Necklace Road and the Ambedkar statue. Walk from People’s Plaza towards NTR Marg, past the 125-foot statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar and the Secretariat, which is lit up after dark.

4. Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge. The bridge over the lake near HITEC City has walkways on both sides and is lit in the evening. Durgam Cheruvu (Blue Line).

5. Charminar from the street. You need a ticket to go up, but not to stand under the 1591 monument, circle it and take in the four roads that meet there. Old City; metro to MG Bus Station, then auto.

6. Laad Bazaar. The lane of lac bangles and wedding finery beside Charminar is a spectacle whether or not you buy.

7. Mecca Masjid. One of the largest mosques in India stands next to Charminar. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times. Dress modestly.

8. Public Gardens, Nampally. The city’s oldest park, with the State Legislature and museum buildings around it, is a quiet walk a few minutes from Nampally metro station.

9. Secunderabad on foot. The Clock Tower, St Mary’s Basilica and the cantonment-era churches make a free self-guided walk. Secunderabad; Secunderabad East (Blue Line).

10. The Sunday book pavements of Abids. When the shops are shut on Sunday, second-hand book sellers spread out along the pavements. Browsing is free, and bargains are easy to find. Assembly or Gandhi Bhavan (Red Line).

Free culture

11. Ravindra Bharathi. Hyderabad’s state auditorium at Lakdikapul hosts Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, music and Telugu theatre most evenings, and many programmes are free. Seats are first come, first served. See the venue page.

12. Lamakaan. The open cultural space in Banjara Hills runs free talks, book discussions, documentary screenings and a Sunday organic bazaar, from Tuesday to Sunday. Its October 2026 calendar included reading circles, film screenings and a cultural evening. Check Lamakaan’s page for what’s on.

13. Kalakriti Art Gallery. Entry to exhibitions at this Banjara Hills gallery is free, and openings are open evening events where you can meet the artist.

14. Gallery-hopping. Several private galleries sit within a short auto ride of each other in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills. None charge entry. Browse art events for current shows.

15. Tech meetups at T-Hub. Developer meetups, startup talks and hackathons at the incubator in Knowledge City are usually free with online registration. Raidurg (Blue Line).

16. Mall events. Inorbit, Sarath City Capital and Lulu stage free performances, festive installations and children’s craft sessions on weekends.

17. Sunday open jams. Tabula Rasa in Jubilee Hills runs an open jam called Sunday Playground. Check the listing for any cover charge.

18. Poetry and open mics. Many poetry and storytelling nights are free or free with an order. Our open mic guide lists them.

27. Ameenpur Lake. The lake on the north-western edge of the city is a recognised biodiversity heritage site and a good place for winter birdwatching.

29. Christmas at the churches. Carol services and midnight mass at St Mary’s Basilica, St John’s and St Joseph’s Cathedral are open to all in December.

30. Window-shopping the bazaars. Begum Bazaar, General Bazaar in Secunderabad and Sultan Bazaar are at their liveliest in the week before Diwali.

A free day, planned

Here is one way to string these together and spend on nothing but transport and tea. Start at Charminar by 8 am, before the traffic builds, and walk Laad Bazaar as the shutters go up. Take an auto to Public Gardens for a mid-morning stroll, then ride the Red Line from Nampally to Lakdikapul. Spend the hot hours at a gallery in Banjara Hills or at Lamakaan, where there is usually a talk or a screening in the afternoon. Be on the terrace of Birla Mandir for sunset, catch an evening recital at Ravindra Bharathi if one is listed that day, and end with a walk along Tank Bund once the lights are on.

Almost free

Some of Hyderabad’s best outings cost less than a plate of biryani.

  • Salar Jung Museum: ₹50 for Indian adults and ₹20 for children. Closed on Fridays.
  • Numaish: ₹50 in 2026, with children under five free. It runs from 1 January to 15 February. See our Numaish guide.
  • Shilparamam: a modest gate fee. Guides list about ₹60 for adults, so confirm at the gate.
  • Golconda Fort and Charminar: standard Archaeological Survey of India tickets, payable at the counter or online.

Tips for a free day out

  • Use the metro. It is the cheapest way across the city, and most of the ideas above are a walk or a short auto ride from a station.
  • Carry water and a cap. Lakefronts and bazaars have little shade.
  • Go early to free shows. Unreserved seating at Ravindra Bharathi and Lamakaan fills before the start.
  • Check closed days. Lamakaan is closed on Mondays.
