About Ravindra Bharathi
Ravindra Bharathi is Hyderabad's state auditorium, built to mark the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore and named after him. The foundation stone was laid in March 1960 and the hall was inaugurated on 11 May 1961 by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, with Tagore's play Mukta Dhara as the first production. It was designed by the architect Mohammed Fayazuddin. The main hall seats about 1,000 and two smaller halls take chamber programmes and press meets. The state's Department of Language and Culture runs it, and the calendar is dominated by Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam recitals, Carnatic and light music, Telugu theatre, literary felicitations and government festivals. Many programmes are free, and seats are first come, first served.
