Ramzan in Hyderabad: Charminar Night Bazaar & Food Walks

During Ramzan the Old City of Hyderabad keeps different hours. After the evening fast is broken, the streets around Charminar, Mecca Masjid, Laad Bazaar and Pathergatti fill with shoppers, and shops that normally shut by about 11 pm stay open deep into the night, in some years until the early hours. The bazaar sells bangles, attar, dates, sevaiyan, clothes, footwear and crockery for Eid, and the last ten nights before the festival are the busiest of the year. Food is the other half of the season. Haleem, the slow-cooked stew of wheat, lentils and meat, is made across the city for this one month, and counters in the Old City, at Tolichowki and along the main roads serve it from late afternoon. Guided night walks and food trails around Charminar sell out quickly. In 2027 Ramzan is expected to begin around 8 or 9 February and Eid ul-Fitr to fall between 9 and 11 March, but the dates depend on the sighting of the moon and are confirmed locally only a day before.
