About Charminar
Charminar, the four-minaret monument at the crossing of the Old City's main roads, was built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of Hyderabad, and is the city's emblem. The Archaeological Survey of India looks after it, and visitors can buy a ticket to climb to the first-floor gallery. The streets around it are the real event space. Laad Bazaar sells lac bangles and wedding finery, Pathergatti has pearls, and Mecca Masjid stands just to the south-west. Heritage walks and food trails start here through the year. During Ramzan the markets around Charminar stay open far beyond their usual 11 pm closing, with haleem counters, attar sellers and Eid shopping late into the night.
