Ganesh Chaturthi in Hyderabad: Khairatabad Ganesh & Immersion

Ganesh Chaturthi, called Vinayaka Chavithi in Telugu, next falls on Saturday 4 September 2027, with the main immersion on Anant Chaturdashi, Tuesday 14 September 2027, according to Drik Panchang. Hyderabad celebrates on a scale matched by few cities outside Maharashtra. The centrepiece is the Khairatabad Ganesh, installed every year since 1954, when Singari Shankaraiah began with a one-foot idol. It grew by about a foot a year, has been made of clay since 2022, and stood about 69 feet tall in 2026. Lakhs of devotees file past during the ten days, and Khairatabad station on the Red Line is a short walk away. Thousands of other pandals go up across the twin cities; the Balapur Ganesh is known for the auction of its laddu on immersion morning. The festival ends with the shobha yatra to Hussain Sagar, where cranes along NTR Marg and Tank Bund lower idols into the lake through the day and night. In 2026 the immersion was on 25 September, and the Khairatabad idol's procession began after a delay of about three hours. This page lists Ganesh Chaturthi events, pandal guides and immersion-day information.

Good to know

  • On immersion day, Tank Bund, NTR Marg and the procession routes are closed to traffic. Check the police route map before stepping out.
  • Look for clay-idol workshops in the week before the festival if you want to make your own Ganesha.
  • Carry water and keep children close; crowds at the lake on immersion evening are very dense.
